Wings of Soul Supporting Victims of Abuse

We Never Give Up!!!

About Us:

Wings of Soul is a UK based charity, dedicated to helping all victims of domestic violence and abuse including women, men, children and the LGBT community.

Our organisation was founded to provide a range of support services to vulnerable people who are struggling against xenophobia, sexism and violence.

We’ve been supporting victims for more than 20 years and throughout this time we’ve been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic violence and abuse.

We empower survivors by keeping their voices at the heart of our work by actively listening to them and pro-actively responding to their needs.

We take a collaborative approach to our work and we stand together with other leading organisations that are dedicated to supporting victims.

The Problem

Some Statistics

The number of domestic abuse crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales in the year ending March 2021 increased by 6%, totalling 845,734 cases. However, the real number of victims of is much higher as unfortunately the majority of cases go unreported.  The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated 2.3 million adults aged 16 to 74 years experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2020. (Source: Office for National Statistics)

According to the British Crime Survey Statistical Bulletin, domestic abuse:

  • Will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime
  • Has more repeat victims than any other crime
  • Is the single most quoted reason for becoming homeless
  • Leads to, on average, 2 women being murdered each week and 30 men per year

The Human Impact

For women in particular, and despite achievements in the field of women’s rights and the promotion of coping policies, two major problems remain:

  • Expression of gender inequality
  • Women who cannot feel safe within their own home

Domestic violence and abuse can take many forms and can have devastating effects on the victims (and their families) for example:

  • Assaults by partners or family members
  • Harassment (moral and sexual)
  • Psychological violence (including coercive and financial controls)
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Rape
  • Torture
  • Femicide

The Financial Impact

As well as causing immense human suffering, the financial cost to society is considerable. The total cost associated with domestic abuse in England and Wales (including policing, criminal and civil legal costs, housing, health service and charitable expenditure) is estimated to be £66 billion per annum, an average of £34,015 for each victim. In addition, the annual cost to the economy is estimated to be £14 billion as a result of lost output due to time off work and reduced productivity. (Source: Office for National Statistics).
